SCAM ALERT: Web design job from Scammers

Published on Nov 8 2016

Friends, indie devs, freelancers, and business owners in Lexington and around the world please look out!

Within 10 minutes I got two text messages that were very nearly identical (but from different phone numbers) about doing some possible web work.

Hello, My name is NAME HERE, I wanna know if you can handle website design for a new company and also if you accept credit cards?? kindly get back to me… so i can send you the job details. Thanks. Name

So I texted back, asking where they got my name. The first said from Eric Wright, who is a friend that interned at Cogitools this summer. The second said from my indeed profile. That was a clue. I’m guessing that Eric has an Indeed profile and that the Cogitools contact information is on it, including our phone number.

Hey Indeed are you listening?! People are stealing your user’s information!

Anyhow, I get the emails and they are exactly the same:

i have business which i want to turn into large scale
business now it located in WI and the company is based on importing
and exporting of Salon Equipment such as Dryer, hair cream,Weavon,Hairdressing,Clippers, i need a best of
the best layout design for it. Can you handle that for me ?. so i need
you to check out this site but i need something more perfect than this
if its possible .… I have a private consultant that has the text content and logo for the site . the site would only
be information, so i need you to give me an estimate.

I want the same number of pages with the example site i gave you to
check excluding videos and blogs.
2. I want only English language
3. I don’t have a domain yet but i want the domain name as
4. you will be updating the site for me.
5. i will be proving the images, logos and content for the site.
6. i want the site up and running before ending of next 2 month.
7. My budget is $2000 to $5000
8.Are you the Owner

So a bit of Googling and I come up with this link, outlining what appears to be the next part of the scam, which would be to ask me to process their credit cards and then transfer some part of that money to a third party.

So I reported the emails as phishing on Gmail. I’m going to send a link to this post to Indeed on twitter or maybe via email. I’m also going to report it to the FBI at I’m also going to share it around on Facebook and Twitter. Friends, don’t get scammed.

The only way we stop these jerks is to stand up to them, not be scammed, and help the authorities catch them.

Hey everybody, share this around. The more eyes on this the better.

Oh, and VOTE TOO.

Happy Tuesday.
